480 Hansa is a stony asteroid and belong to the Hansa family located in the central region of the asteroid belt and is approximately 56 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 21 May 1901, by astronomers Max Wolf and Luigi Carnera at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany and was named after the Hanseatic League, a medieval European trade association

Maximilian Franz Joseph Cornelius Wolf (1863-1932) was the chairman of astronomy at the University of Heidelberg and director of the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory from 1902 until his death.

In 1891, he discovered his first asteroid, 323 Brucia, and named it after Catherine Wolfe Bruce.
He pioneered the use of astrophotographic techniques to automate the discovery of asteroids. In time-exposure photographs, asteroids appear as short streaks and he discovered 248 asteroids.
He also discovered several comets, including 14P/Wolf and 43P/Wolf-Harrington.
He won a competition with E. E. Barnard on who would be the first to observe the return of Halley's Comet (P1/Halley) in April 1910.
He discovered Nova Aquilae 1927 and 4 supernovae: SN 1895A, SN 1909A, SN 1920A and with Reinmuth, SN 1926A.

Luigi Carnera (1875 - 1962) was an Italian astronomer and mathematician. The main-belt asteroid 39653 Carnera was named in his honour. In his early career he worked as Max Wolf's assistant at Heidelberg, Germany where he discovered 16 asteroids.
