Comet 78P/Gehrels is now moving out of the morning twilight. On the morning of June 29 the comet was magnitude 13 with a coma 0.8' wide and a short tail 2' (0.033 degrees) long. The comet was at perihelion in its orbit 185 million miles from the Sun on June 25 and is near its peak brightness. The comet will make its close approach to Earth 144 million miles away on December 31 but will have faded to about magnitude 15.
