After several consecutive weeks of relentless overcast skies and persistent drizzle, the weather in Rafaela, Santa Fe, Argentina, finally broke today. I took immediate advantage of the clear sky to target the Sun with my H-alpha telescope, and was rewarded with an extraordinary sight on the western limb: a complex system of towering plasma loops. These intricate structures clearly trace the invisible, curved lines of the local magnetic field. The image captures ionized hydrogen plasma suspended high above the surface, reaching an estimated height of over 90,000 kilometers—more than 7 times the diameter of the Earth. You can distinctly see fine magnetic filaments where cooler plasma begins to cascade back toward the solar surface in a phenomenon known as coronal rain. It was a monumental way to welcome the Sun back after weeks of rain!
